EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.  It is a psychological modality developed by Francine Shapiro.  EMDR is based on the position that psychopathology is a result of maladaptive encoding and/or incomplete processing of traumatic events in one’s life.  As a result, one’s ability to appropriately integrate these experiences is hindered and challenging symptoms may emerge. In order to help manage symptoms, EMDR uses an 8 phase approach to help diminish or eliminate distress from traumatic memories.  Though most commonly used in the treatment of trauma, EMDR can be utilized to help with a variety of symptoms including grief, depression, and anxiety.  For more information about EMDR, please visit www.emdrcanada.org.
